June 25, 2005June 24, 2005June 23, 2005June 22, 2005June 21, 2005FANTASY STUD OR ROOKIE DUD-CEDRIC BENSONCedric Benson was the 4th player selected in the '05 draft by the Chicago Bears out of Texas. At this point Benson was the most accomplished RB in college being a 4 year starter for the Longhorns. Texas has paved the way for some pretty good NFL backs over the years from Earl Campbell to Priest Holmes and Ricky Williams and Benson is sure to be the next of those backs. Benson joins a Bears team that averaged only 101.5 yards rushing/game(bottom third in the NFL),finished dead last in passing offense and only Miami had less time of possession. Chicago has Rex Grossman as its returning QB but he has had the injury bug so the team still is unsure of what he can do. Kyle Orton was drafted by the team in the 4th round and could push for some playing time as well. Either way the QB situation is still a question mark and although the team signed Muhsin Muhammad as well as drafting Mark Bradley the team will be a run first/pass second ball control offense. Thomas Jones finally had a solid year as the Bears primary ball carrier but it is my belief he is much more suited to be a 3rd down back especially because of his pass catching abilities(153 career receptions). Benson is a power back that has been compared favorably to Ricky Williams;and much like Williams needs to take better care of the ball. Benson was drafted to be an instant impact player and will become the starter early into the season. The Bears will lean on their running game to control the clock as well as allowing the QB to not make so many mistakes. Benson will be a workhorse and will post solid numbers in his rookie season making him a FANTASY STUD for the '05 season. Sheamus

June 19, 2005June 18, 2005June 17, 2005FANTASY STUD OR ROOKIE DUD-ALEX SMITHWith the first overall selection in the '05 draft the 49ers selected Alex Smith from Utah. Smith as with all the Utes enjoyed a Cinderella season as the team went undefeated and was able to crash the BCS party. Unfortunately for Smith this season as the 49ers signal caller will turn out to be a very difficult one. The 49ers offense last season was ranked 26th in the NFL and the team allowed 52 sacks to their QB's. The teams running game has been a disappointment with Kevan Barlow and the team lost its' most reliable receiver,Cedric Wilson(47-641-3), to the Steelers in free agency. The 49ers addressed the anemic offensive line by bringing in Jonas Jennings,a left tackle from Buffalo to hopefully protect the blind side of Smith. On the positive side the 49ers do have a solid TE in Eric Johnson but is difficult to build an offense around a TE. The young receivers were given plenty of playing time last season and someone out of the group needs to emerge as a the teams go to player(Brandon Lloyd?). The team has sunk as low as possible from all the success of the last 20 years due to salary cap problems it is now paying for. Smith does have the tools to become a successful NFL quarterback but it may be wise to let him watch from the sidelines early on so not to rattle his confidence. It will be another long season for the team by the bay and Smith, although with future star quality, will be a FANTASY DUD for the '05 season. Sheamus

June 16, 2005June 15, 2005FANTASY STUD OR ROOKIE DUD-TROY WILLIAMSONThe Vikings with the #7 pick selected as a surprise pick Troy Williamson from South Carolina. With the trade of Randy Moss it was imperative to draft a big, fleet footed receiver that will stretch the field as the Vikings like to do. Williamson was a big play receiver for the Gamecocks and will fill that role for the Vikings. Although not a refined route runner the Vikings will bring him along slowly and will try to exploit what he does best. The Vikings have a solid running game and the receiving corps is deep. Williamson does have the pressure of trying to replace Moss but with Culpepper being the 2nd best QB in the game Williamson will be put in the right positions to make big plays. The Vikings have all the parts on offense to continue to put up a lot of points and Williamson with his size and speed will be a major part of the teams offense. Williamson should be the first rookie WR taken in fantasy drafts will post solid reception and touchdown numbers. The Vikings will take advantage of Williamson's talents and as the season wears on will become a bigger factor in the teams offense. With all the offensive weapons the Vikings have and with Culpepper calling the shots Williamson will prove to be a FANTASY STUD for the '05 season. Sheamus

June 7, 2005FANTASY STUD OR ROOKIE DUD-SHAROD "RODDY" WHITEWhite was the 6th receiver taken in the first round with the 27th pick by the Atlanta Falcons out of UAB. White was a four year starter and improved with each season. Another one of this years athletic receivers White still needs to refine his route running and be more assertive in his cuts to the ball. White also needs to become more adept at his run blocking if he is to be an every down player. White does however possess big play ability and can stretch the field, something that Pierless Price has failed to do on a consistent level for the Falcons. The Falcons passing game, especially its' WR'S,needs major improvement for this team to be a true contender in the NFC. Although Michael Vick is a highlight type player he has yet to mature in his developement into a pass first/run second QB. The Falcons success is built on a solid return game and a ball control running game. Vick already has his favorite target in Alge Crumpler and it will be tough for a rookie to step in and gain Vick's confidence. Vick only threw for 2313 yards for the season so those numbers need to improve for White to be a consistent fantasy contributor. There are too many questions concerning the Falcons passing game and Vick still needs to prove he is a true NFL QB who will display patience towards the passing game for me to think that White's numbers will be inconsistent making him a ROOKIE DUD for the '05 season. June 4, 2005FANTASY STUD OR ROOKIE DUD-REGGIE BROWNBrown was selected in the 2nd round with the 35th pick by the Philadelphia Eagles out of Georgia where he teamed with Fred Gibson giving the Bulldogs a solid 1-2 punch.I fully expect Terrell Owens to be an Eagle at seasons start and with that Brown's value will increase. The Eagles it seems over the last few years have always been seaching for a second option at the reciever position. Brown is a physical player willing to make the tough catches in traffic and over the middle. Having T.O. will ease the coverage from Brown and it will make his adjustment that much easier. At times Brown seems to lose his concentration especially if he is not as involved in the game as he would like. With T.O. being what he is Brown may not see as many passes so he has to understand that and be prepared for every play. The Eagles have all the players on offense returning from last season so Brown for the time being will not be looked at to carry a bigger burden than neccesary. McNabb is a top tier QB and will use all the players at his disposal. Brown is in the perfect position to have immediate success at the pro level and as we have seen throughout the league receivers on the opposite side of great recievers can put up some big numbers of their own. The Eagles like to throw the ball and put pressure on opposing defenses so Brown will be given every chance to contribute. Brown may be a low round selection in many fantasy but his numbers will prove him to be a FANTASY STUD.
