Rookie RBs Who Can Flat Out Fly

The NFL Combine surely showcased some fast running backs. Two of the most notable were a couple guys who ran times of 4.40 in the 40. They were Jerius Norwood of Mississippi State, and Leon Washington of Florida State.

Where Will Cutler Go ?

Although traditional thinking is that Vanderbilt QB Jay Cutler will be drafted around pick #16 in the 1st round, there are rumblings around the NFL that he will be gone well before that.

The Saints are reported to be coveting Cutler's talents, and could conceivably select him with the #2 pick, giving the Titans their wish of grabbing USC QB Matt Leinart at #3, and dropping Texas QB Vince Young out of the Top 5. Young's stock has been steadily dropping in the past few weeks, and the Cutler rumor is not very far fetched at all.

Four TEs Showcase Speed At The Combine

Four TEs showed some real speed out of that position and will probably all get drafted because of that feat. Maryland TE Vernon Davis ran a 4.37 40, a time only eclipsed by 2 WRs, and easily the fastest time ever ran by a TE at the Combine.

Georgia's Leonard Pope ran the 40 in 4.53, Western Michigan's Tony Scheffler in 4.56, and Garrett Mills of Tulsa in 4.57.

Moulds Rejects Bills' Offer

Bills WR Eric Moulds has rejected the Bills offer to restructure his contract which will pay him 11 million dollars in 2006, which should mean the end of the road for Moulds, who will more than likely be released. He will probably not receive a contract anywhere near the one he was supposed to get from the Bills after his pedestrian performances over the last two years.

The Star Of The Combine

There is question that the star of the NFL Combine was Maryland TE Vernon Davis. He ran the 40 in under 4.4 and had a good day with the nemch press. There should be no question that Davis will be a top 10 pick in April.

Jets Shopping Abraham

The Jets are reported to be shopping around DE John Abraham. One interesting rumor has Abraham and another bunch of players/picks to the Texans for the #1 pick overall. Stay tuned to EFF to see how this plays out.

Vinatieri set to become a free agent

In keeping with a promise they made to him last offseason when the Patriots designated kicker Adam Vinatieri their franchise player, the team has opted not to label him this offseason with the hopes of working out a long term deal. If no agreement can reached, then Vinatieri becomes an unrestricted free agent on March 3rd. Seeing as how the Patriots have made resigning him a top priority, don't look for a new address for Adam in 2006. If things don't work out in New England, though, look for Dallas, with old coach Bill Parcells, to make the biggest push. Washington and even the New York Jets are other possibilities.

Dolphins looking to upgrade quarterback position

In an effort to build upon coach Nick Saban's successful first campaign, Miami is looking to upgrade the talent at several key positions, including quarterback. And two of the names at the top of their wish list are soon to be free agent Patrick Ramsey of the Washington Redskins and the Minnesota Vikings Daunte Culpepper. Right now, Ramsey would be the cheaper option and wouldn't be the damaged goods that Culpepper would be. But, if Daunte is healthy, he is a top 5 quarterback. By the time March 3rd rolls around, they'll be others added to the mix.

Two more quarterbacks earn interest from Dolphins

Reports out of Miami have the Dolphins also interested in quarterbacks David Garrard of Jacksonville and Steve McNair of Tennessee to go along with their interest in Patrick Ramsey and Daunte Culpepper.

Colts Make Their Choice

The Indianapolis Colts have signed WR Reggie Wayne to a 6 yr/40 million dollar contract with a 13.5 million dollar signing bonus. While the Colts still have a franchise tag remaining it is not believed they will exercise that on RB Edgerrin James due to salary cap implications it may cause. This all but assures that James will be in another teams uniform for the '06 season

Brees to become free agent?

The San Diego Chargers have declined to place either the transition or franchise tag on quarterback Drew Brees. What does this mean for all of you Brees fans? If the Chargers and Brees cannot reach a contract agreement by March 3rd, then he would become an unrestricted free agent. While no mention of a possible destination has been brought up yet, the thought here is that he may want to play closer to the midwest, where he was a standout at Purdue University. Did anyone say Cleveland?

Williams Story Gains Some Light

By now all of us have heard the news that Miami RB Ricky Williams has failed a drug test for the 4th time which would result in a league mandated one year suspension from the league. Truth is Rickys' "failed " test was due to the fact that Williams is in India and he did not show up for his required test. A player that does not show for a scheduled test is presumed guilty by the guidelines in the leagues substance abuse policy. Last season Williams, upon his return for his early season suspension, had been subject to up to 10 drug tests a month and passed them all. This story still has some legs to it as it is almost certain the Players Union will step in to attempt to erase the suspension. While we agree that Williams has a right after the season to do what he wishes he also assumes all the risks that his absense may cause. Ricky once again has shown to his team and a coaching staff that supported him that he has no regards to them. Ricky was a a low risk finacially to the Dolphins last season at about $500 K but the team was hoping to trade him this off season for draft picks in which the Broncos were the leading suitor. This latest stunt will definately put any of those plans on hold and will leave the Dolphins in a no win situation with a former ALL-Pro player with no value to them.

Pennington's status up in the air

With their concern over the health of Chad Pennington's right shoulder, the New York Jets seem to be unwilling to pay Pennington his nine million plus dollar salary for the 2006 season. The team reportedly has or will approach Pennington about a sizable pay cut (a 2006 salary in the neighborhood of one million dollars) in order to lesson their cap hit and be able to sign a quarterback in the event Pennington cannot play. The team could also cut him outright on by March 2, but would still be on the books for his signing bonus. Pennington is expected to start throwing again in early March, but the word is that he has lost arm strength that he cannot get back. Either way, the Jets and new coach Eric Mangini are in a lose/lose situation.

Law And Jets To Part Ways

Ty Law IDP NY Jets will most likely be released from the team. It appears to be a mutual parting of the ways. Law made the Pro Bowl but the Jets had injury problems and faded during the season. Kansas City is one team to show a possible interest in Law.

Texans In The News

The Houston Texans have picked up the 3 years remaining on David Carrs' with the hope that newly hired Offensive Coordinator and ex-Packer coach Mike Sherman can turn his career around. Foremost the Texans need to improve their pourous offensive line and lessen the amount of punishment that Carr has taken the last couple of years. New HC Gary Kubiak witnessed first hand while with the Broncos just how valuable line play is to the overall success of a team. While Reggie Bush is certainly an enticing player it is our belief that the Texans would be better served to shop the #1 overall pick in this springs draft and stock pile picks to address the lines needs.

T.O. to have plenty of suitors

As the Terrell Owens saga in Philadelphia enters its last month, the number of teams expressing an interest in him continues to grow. Reports from the Super Bowl in Detroit have the Kansas City Chiefs, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Miami Dolphins joining the Denver Broncos as possible destinations for the talented yet emotionally challenged Owens. If this list continues to grow, then the Eagles may not totally lose out. If one of the teams consider him to be the last piece to the puzzle, it's conceivable that a trade could be worked out. But buyer beware: this is Terrell Owens, and after one season, you may find yourself in the same sinking ship that was the Philadelphia Eagles this past season.
