EFF Weekly NFL Picks

After a rough 8-6 week last week, the Commish looks to rebound with some tough games this weekend

Weekly Picks: week 4

Posted by ray at 9:56 PM

New Starting QB For Titans

It looks as if QB Vince Young will be the starting QB for the Titans in Week4. QB Kerry Collins will be the QB2 and serve as insurance if the Vince Young Era ends in injury or disaster.

Posted by joe at 8:31 PM

RBBC In Houston

It appears that although RB Ron Dayne will start on Sunday HC Gary Kukiak would like for both he and RB Samkon Gado to each get about 15 carries in the game.

Posted by jon at 12:50 PM

Henry Inactive V. Patriots

The Cincinnati Bengals have deactivated WR Chris Henry for their game v. the New England Patriots. Their was speculation that Henry would be disciplined for being in a drunken stupor the night LB Odell Thurman was areested.

Posted by jon at 12:46 PM

It Looks As If Westbrook Will Play

Although Eagles RB Brian Westbrook did not practice this week, he will probably play in Week 4, considering the Eagles play on Monday night, giving Westbrook an extra day to rest.

Posted by joe at 12:31 PM

Will T.O. Start?

Who knows if Cawboys WR Terrell Owens will start or even play in Week 4. He says that he's ready, and the Cowboys state that he will play, but considering his week of taking too many pain killers and a broken finger, it looks as if he will be unimpressive if he does play. EFF sugggests that there are better starts than TO this week.

Posted by joe at 12:28 PM

The Colts Week 4 Kicker?

It looks as if Colts PK Adam Vinatieri will start in Week 4, and PK Martin Gramatica will handle kickoffs.

Posted by joe at 12:27 PM

A Game Time Decision For The Bears

Bears TE Desmond Clark is reported to be a game time decision this week. As always, he is a bad fantasy decision at TE.

Henson Signed

And the winner of the QB Drew Henson sweepstakes is.....The Vikings. He will serve as QB insurance until QB Tavaras Jackson is fully healed from his surgery.

Posted by joe at 3:35 PM

Alexander May Play On Sunday

Don't write off Shaun Alexander and his broken foot just yet. Alaexander is listed as doubtful for week 4 but he plans to undergo another MRI to see if the crack has healed. Alexander says he is pain free in his foot and if the MRI shows the crack has healed it is conceivable that he will see some action on Sunday.

Posted by jon at 3:30 PM

Owens Hospitalized

Cowboys WR Terrell Owens was hospitalized after a reported adverse reaction to the pain killers he was taking for his injured finger. He was forced to vomit, and currently there is no firther information available. This should all but seal any chances of him playing in Week 4.

Cardinals Week 4 Starting QB

It appears as though QB Kurt Warner will start for the Cardinals in Week 4, not QB Matt Leinart, as was speculated earlier this week. It would not be a surprise however, to see Leinat at some point this week.

EFF Breaking News - Alexander OUT

Its official. Seahawks RB Shaun Alexander will miss possibly at least a month with a cracked bone in his foot. Alexander owners should immediately move to sign RB Maurice Morris for the short term.

Posted by joe at 5:55 PM

RBBC In Carolina?

Panthers HC John Fox has said that he will go with the hot hand at RB for the near future, which of course is bad news for RB DeShaun Foster and RB Deangelo Williams owners. But it is widely believed that the Panthers are one injury to DeShaun Foster away to anointing RB Williams as their RB1.

Posted by joe at 5:49 PM

New QB For Cardinals?

Although it is not written in stone, it is entirely possible that the Matt Leinart era could be beginning for the Cardinals, possibly as early as Week 4. Fans and teammates alike are reportedly interested to see what the rookie from USC can do.

Posted by joe at 5:44 PM

Bucs QB Update

While the Bucs search for a QB to take the place of QB1 Chris Simms (splenectomy), they are going ahead with plans for QB Bruce Gradkowski as their QB1 for Week 5. Expect the team to sign a veteran (Jay Fiedler?) before next week.

Posted by joe at 5:34 PM

Texans RB Update

The Texans will start RB Ron Dayne for the foreseeable future.

Posted by joe at 5:25 PM

Trent Green Update

The Chiefs have stated that QB1 Trent Green will be out for their Week 4 game. QB Damon Huard will more than likely start for the team in Week 4.

Posted by joe at 5:20 PM

Alexander News

Early word is that Seahawks RB Shaun Alexander will either be out for Week 4 or be very limited in the game. He should be started obviously in all leagues if he plays, but he could have some low numbers, which would probably be good numbers for a lesser RB. Play Alexander with caution until more news comes out of Seattle.

Posted by joe at 5:15 PM

A Matchup To Exploit

If anyone was looking for a big game, it is Eagles RB Brian Westbrook. Not only is he enjoying a terrific season, he is also playing the Packers in Week 4, a team that he has historically had big games against.

Posted by joe at 11:53 AM

A Week 4 Sleeper?

Not that anyone has forgotten about him yet this season, but Raiders RB Lamont Jordan could be poised for a big game in Week 4 as the Raiders face the porous Browns.

Two RBs Injured

Patriots RB Corey Dillon injured his arm last night and 49ers RB Frank Gore strained his abdomen yesterday. Both are questionable for their next game.

Posted by joe at 9:27 AM

Favre Reaches Milestone

Not much fantasy value here, but Packers QB Brett Favre threw his 400th TD pass yesterday, becoming only the 2nd QB all time to reach that mark. He now trails the great Dan Marino who has 420 TD passes. Congratulations Brett !!

Posted by joe at 9:24 AM

49ers TE Breaks Leg

49ers TE Vernon Davis broke his leg in yesterday's game and will miss at least a month of action.

Posted by joe at 9:19 AM

Simms Injured

Bucs QB1 Chris Simms had to have his spleen removed after rupturing it in Sunday's game. He is expected to miss up to 3 months of action and his season could be in jeopardy. The Bucs will probably look to rookie QB Bruce Gradkowski or possibly sign a veteran before the week is out to start thei next game.

Late, Late news

As of 12:45 p.m. EST:

Green Bay running back Ahman Green will NOT be playing today

Carolina wide receiver Steve Smith will play but will see only 15 to possibly 20 snaps

Washington running back T.J. Duckett is inactive for today's game as well as Minnesota wide receiver Marcus Robinson and Tennessee running back Chris Brown

Posted by ray at 10:29 AM

Coles A Tough Fantasy Start

Contrary to earlier reports, it looks as if Jets WR Lavernaeus Coles will miss most of the game today, if he's even active at all.

Posted by joe at 9:34 AM

EFF Quick Notes

Colts PK Adam Vinatieri and WR Brandon Stokley are out for Week 3.

PK Maartin Gramatica will be the Colts PK in Week 3.

The Seahawks have activated WR Deion Branch onto the active roster.

Browns RB Reuben Droughns said that he will try to play in Week 3, but he is probably a bad fantasy start this week.

The Packers state that RB Vernand Morency is ready to go in case RB1 Ahman Green is hindered by injury in Week 3. Both are bad fantasy choices this week.

Ravens TE Todd Heap is a game time decision with an ankle sprain. Stay away from Heap this week.

Vikings RB Ciatrick Fason is expected to be inactive in Week 3.

It looks as if WR Laverneus Coles will play in Week 3, even though he did not practice all week.

The Bettors Edge

Washington Redskins v. Houston Texans
The Redskins head into Houston as a 4.5 point favorite over a Texan team that has struggled again this year. Reports say that RB Wali Lundy is now #3 on the depth chart and Ron Dayne who has not started a game in 2 years is said to be getting the nod this week. With Clinton Portis an almost certainty to play this looks like a game the 'Skins should win. A trend for the Redskins is that they have gone 0-10 since the '03 season(a victory v. NE Patriots) as a visitor against an AFC opponent. Ride the streak until it's broken and take Houston with the 4.5.

Miami Dolphins v Tennessee Titans

Both teams enter the season at 0 and 2 and in the case of the Dolphins this is almost a must win to keep their playoff hopes alive. In Miami Daunte Culpepper still looks to be favoring his bum knee and has not been able to get the Dolphins offense untracked. What more can be said about the Titans other than Kerry Collins is the starting QB on a team going nowhere quick. The Titans have the not so great honor of leading the league in points allowed so this should be the week the Dolphin "O" gets untracked. The Titans have lost their last 6 road games by a combined score of 139-33 so look for this game to go over the number(36).

Matt Jones, WR, Jax

Wait as long as possible before inserting them into the starting lineup.

The Raiders worked out QB Tommy Maddox yesterday, but was not signed as yet. He stands a pretty good shot to land a job somewhere with all of the QB vacancies around the NFL.

Posted by joe at 2:35 PM

Smith Update

Panthers WR Steve Smith practiced today and hopefully, for his owners, will be in the starting lineup in Week 3. If he practices tomorrow, EFF suggests taking a chance and giving him a start.

Posted by joe at 2:31 PM

QB Workouts

The Colts worked out QB Drew Henson and the Chiefs worked out QB Bredlee Van Pelt. The Colts also worked out rookie FA Kevin McMahan, but none of the three mentioned were signed.

Vinatieri Update

Colts K Adam Vinatieri is expected to practice this week, although he has not practiced at all this week. He will probably play on Sunday, but it is also possible that the Colts will sign FA PK Martin Gramatica, who has been in Indianapolis all week. Stay tuned for more news on Vinatieri, but start him with care, as he will probably be a game time decision.

Andersen back with Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons have signed future Hall of Famer and former Falcon kicker Morton Andersen. He will handle all of the extra point duties as well as field goal attempts under 50 yards. Michael Koenan will handle the kickoff duties as well as his punting responsbilities. After missing four field goal attempts on Sunday, it was just a matter of time before Koenan was replaced, albeit no one saw this coming. Andersen is the second leading scorer in NFL history with 2,358 points in his 23 year career.

Edge and Cadillac Off To Slow Starts

To this point in the early season 2 of the leagues premier RB's have struggled mightily. In Arizona Edgerrin James is averaging but 68.5 yards rushing per game and in Tampa Bay the Cadillac is more like an Edsel accounting for only 59 total rushing yards in his 2 games

Posted by jon at 7:18 PM

Kickers In The News

The New York Jets worked out FA K Paul Edinger on Tuesday

The agent for FA K Todd Peterson has contacted the Falcons as to a possible return to come back to the Falcons. Peterson was cut in favor of Michael Koenen but to this point it has not gone as the Falcons had hoped for. Koenen missed all four of his FG attempts on Sunday and has only made 2 of 8 FG attempts this season.

Smith Seeking 2nd Opinion

Panthers WR Steve Smith is seeking a second opinion on his injured hamstring, possibly an indication that things are not improving. His progress should be monitored this week.

Posted by joe at 3:30 PM

Chargers and Titans Agree On Deal

The Titans have agreed on a deal to send QB Billy Volek to the Chargers. The deal is for a draft pick, more than likely a 5th or a 6th rounder. Volek will probably back up QB1 Phillip Rivers. He might be ready for Week 4.

EFF Quick Hits

Packers WR Koren Robinson is an unknown quantity, and a huge risk/reward player. Pick him up on the waiver wire with caution.

Bengals WR TJ Houshmandzadeh is expected to play in Week 3.

Browns WR Joe Jurevicius is not expected to play in Week 3.

Falcons K Mike Koenan is on a very short leash in Atlanta after missing 4 FGs in Week 2.

The Raiders will probably re-sign QB Jeff George this week to work as a backup to QB Andrew Walter. George has no fantasy value.

Titans QB Billy Volek will probably sign with either the Chargers or the Raiders.

The Broncos have signed WR Quincy Morgan to be either a WR 4 or 5 possibly. Morgan has negligible fantasy value.

Raiders QB Andrew Walter will most likely start in Week 4.

Seahwks WR Deion Branch will play in Week 3.

Jets RB Kevan Barlow will probably start in Week 3.

Lendale White of the Titans is listed as questionable with a bad back, but he will play

New York Giants tight end Jeremy Shockey (ankle) is probable for Sunday

Tennessee running back Travis Henry (toe, questionable) will be a game time decision

Philadelphia running back Brian Westbrook (knee) has been bouncing between questionable and probable all week. Look for him to play, but with a limited workload

Carolina wideout Steve Smith is again questionable with a bad right hamstring. Do not expect him to play.

Steelers receiver Hines Ward and Patriots wideout Doug Gabriel (both hamstrings) are listed as probable and should be a go on Sunday

Tampa running back Cadillac Williams (back) has been upgraded to probable

Denver running back Mike Bell (finger), San Francisco tight end Vernon Davis (hip), Baltimore running back Jamal Lewis (hip) and Ravens tight end Todd Heap (back) are all listed as probable for Sunday

Wide receiver Joe Jurevicius (ribs) of Cleveland, tight end Erron Kinney (knee) from Tennessee and tight end Jerramy Stevens (knee) from Seattle are all out for this weekend

Indianapolis wideout Brandon Stokely is listed as questionable and will not play Sunday as is Bengals receiver T.J. Houshmanzadeh (heel) and Carolina running back Nick Goings (thigh)

Chicago Bear wide receiver Justin Gage is listed as questionable with a rib injury, but is expected to play

Washington Redskin running back Clinton Portis (shoulder) has been downgraded from questionable to doubtful for Sunday and will not play

Although listed as questionable, wide receiver Koren Robinson (knee) will amke his Green Bay packers debut on Sunday, mainly on special teams as a kick returner

Posted by ray at 8:58 PM

EFF Quick Hits

Pittsburgh has signed runningback Najeh Davenport with the intention of having him replace Jerome Bettis as the team's short yardage back. Duce Staley and Verron Hayes both failed in the role, so the job is basically Davenport's to lose. The only knock against him is he can't stay healthy

As reported earlier by EFF, expect the Tampa Bay Buccanneers to resign wide receiver David Boston within the next two to three weeks

Newly acquired Packer running back Vernand Morency will be active for Sunday's game, but will probably not play unless there is an injury to Ahman Green or Noah Herron

By putting in extra time since his trade to Seattle on Monday, new receiver Deion Branch is hoping to be activated for Sunday's home game against the Arizona Cardinals. According to head coach Mike Holmgren, it will be a game time decision, but it might be hard not to activate him

Texans, Packers swap backs

The Green Bay Packers traded running back Samkon Gado to the Houston Texans for rb Vernand Morency.

FIV 1: For the moment, Gado will be number three on the depth chart behind Wali Lundy and Ron Dayne, whose value did increase a bit because of the trade. As for Morency, the change could do him good, as his style of running did not mesh with coach Gary Kubiak's offensive philosophy. He will get a chance to show what he can do, but is still behind Ahman Green, Noah Herron and William Hederson. Look for him to eventually a contributor on both offense and special teams.

Barlow To See More Carries

Jet RB Kevan Barlow will see more than the 11 carries that he had last week for the Jets. Barlow came to camp only a week or so from opening day but he seems to be adapting to the Jets playbook on a fairly rapid pace. Barlow should be the teams #1 RB within a few weeks time

2) Koren Robinson, WR, GB
3) Rod Gardner, WR, KC

Chiefs ink Gardner

The Kansas City Chiefs have signed free agent wide receiver Rod Gardner to a three year contract.

FVI 2: This could be a good signing for the Chiefs, who desperately needed to upgrade their receiving corps. There are still two questions: how long will Trent Green be out before KC's offense can truely take advantage of Garner's arrival, and if Gardner is worthy of a three year deal, how could he possibly be cut by the Packers???

The Boston Globe is reporting that WR Deion Branch has been dealt from the New England Patriots to the Seattle Seahawks for a 2007 1st round draft pick.

EFF Take: This move was nessesatated for the Seahawks for 2 reasons:
1) The Health of Darrell Jackson and the lack of depth at the WR position and with that lack of depth QB Matt Hasselbeck absorbed too many hits in Detroit
2) If the Seahawks have any SuperBowl aspirations the offensive unit needs to score more than just FG's v. the Lions.
For the Patriots they received a first round selection for Branch which is what they had been asking for right along

Philadelphia WRs: Donte Stallworth might have a productive game.

Cowboys WRs: Terrell Owens might have a good game.

Raiders WRs: Expect Randy Moss to cath a TD today.

Players who could come up big: Titans QB Vince Young (Doubt it), 49ers RB Frank gore (Maybe), Bengals WR Chris Henry (Probably), Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin (Probably), Bills WR Lee Evans (Maybe), Panthers WR Keary Colbert (Doubt it).
